Alex Partridge Is Head Of The River

Alex Partridge was part of the Leander Rowing Club that celebrated reclaiming the prestigious Head of The River title at the weekend.

Alex competed in the Annual race down the Thames from Mortlake to Putney following the Championship Course made famous by the Oxford Cambridge Boat Race. The race was founded by the rowing coach Steve Fairbairn and the first ever  Head of The River Race took place in 1927.

Considered to be the peak of the head race season, The Head of The River Race attracts professional crews from all over the world. Despite two last minute changes to the crew, Alex helped row the Leander crew to victory over Moseley with a time of 16.50.75.

Starting the day in second position with a 420-strong fleet, the Leander crew quickly made up the time deficit on the leaders. At the Hammersmith Bridge Leander were just 0.8 sec of  Molesey's lead and in the final third of the race took a further 4 seonds off their rivals to regain the title. Leander confirmed their place as one of Britains leading rowing teams winning their 6th Head of the River Race in the last 10 years. The win last Saturday also completes a hat trick of victories for Leander, who won the Fours Head in November and the Women's Head last month. No other club has ever won all three major events over the Championship Course in the same season.

Alex is the marquee name in the hugely successful rowing club which boasts a number of current GB rowers along with Olympic giants Sir Steve Redgrave and Sir Matthew Pincent. The most medalled athlete of the current GB rowing squad, Alex's sights are firmly set on going one better in home water at London 2012 after he secured the silver medal at the last Olympics in Beijing.

Congratulations from MTC for a fantastic win!!
