Brad And Lizzie Victorious

Both Bradley Wiggins and Lizzie Armitstead gained their first National Road Race Championship victories at the weekend.

The race took place on a hilly course around the village of Stamfordham in Northumberland. This year saw Lizzie turning silver into gold, and Brad storming away to a convincing win.

Lizzie, after finishing second for the previous 2 years, made the first break on the course and finally finished several bike lengths ahead of second place. Lizzie beat off all competition including the previous year's champion with a superb 250m sprint finish at the end of her 65 mile race, to take her first victory. Lizzie, the current World Team Pursuit gold medallist, was delighted with the victory.

"Finally, thank God. I've been getting too many silvers," said Lizzie after the race.

Meanwhile Bradley, the three-time Olympic champion, pulled away in the final circuit to finish the course and seal the victory an incredible 35 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Brad entered the race in fantastic form having won the Critérium du Dauphiné stage race and the British Time Trial Championships earlier in the year. His victory in the road race means Bradley will wear the national champion's jersey on all 21 stages of the 2011 Tour de France.

Congratulations from everyone at MTC!
