Commonwealth Silver For Lizzie

Lizzie Armitstead sprints to the silver medal for England in the 112-kilometre women's road race in Delhi...

In the women's road race, Lizzie Armitstead secured a Commonwealth silver medal to add to her ever expanding trophy collection. In the searing mid-morning heat, the England team rode superbly to keep Lizzie in the medal contention and the 21-year-old from Otley once again displayed her prestigious talents as she sprinted away but was marginally beaten into second by Australia's Rochelle Gilmoreto.

With only 37 out of 59 women completing the race due to the exhausting conditions, Lizzie should have been delighted with yet another great ride but was instead left feeling slightly disappointed at just being pipped to the gold.

Lizzie commented "I think I had the legs, but never mind. It is a Commonwealth silver and I know my friends and family at home will think it's fantastic. It's just I know I'm capable of beating Rochelle, so that's a little bit disappointing. But she was faster on the day, so all credit to her."

However, when Lizzie who is the leading rider in the England team, reflected on the performance she said "for our first attempt as a team - we've not even tried it in training - I'm really impressed and I think we can only get better. Come London we should be a force to be reckoned with."

Congratulations to Lizzie and David Daniell on their Commonwealth silver medals!
