Kelly Wins Title On Comeback
Kelly Sotherton claimed the British 400m title at the Aviva UK trials this weekend on her first competition since 2008 and first race as a 400m runner
After claiming an astonishing victory, Kelly Sotherton had to fight back the tears after winning her first British track title in the 400m at the Aviva UK Trials on Sunday 13th February on her first competitive outing on an athletics track since 2008.
At the start line, the former heptathlete competiting in her first competitive 400m as a specialist of the event could not be sure what the outcome would be in an entirely new discipline and had the aim of just coming through her first race unscathed and feeling good. However, Kelly produced an accomplished performance, clocking a season's best of 53.46 seconds.
Feeling overwhelmed post race Kelly said "I don't think I've ever cried and been happy at the same time. It means a lot. Probably more than some other wins I've had in my career. I feel really emotional because a year ago I was told my career could be at an end ... I had to make a decision whether to end my career or try something new. Last May, when I was told I should probably give up heptathlon, I went to Charles [van Commenee, the head coach of UK Athletics] and asked if he would consider funding me for the 4x400m ... He looked at the stats and saw what I ran in Beijing, he said he could fund me for a year in the 4x400 and see how it goes ... hopefully I'm proving him right so far."
This result highlights Kelly's credentials and when asked about her chances of receiving a medal at London 2012, Kelly replied ". If everyone is fit, we'll have a cracking 4x400m team."
Harry Aikines-Aryeetey produced a solid display at the trials to finish second in the men's 60m and secure a place in the Team GB squad for the upcoming European Championships in Paris.
MTC's Kelly Sotherton, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, Jenny Meadows and Phillips Idowu are all scheduled to compete in Birmingham this weekend.
