Marathon Des Sables

James becomes fastest Brit in MDS history...

James Cracknell completed the gruelling Marathon Des Sables in a remarkable 12th place overall. The result placed him as the fastest Briton in the history of the 6 day event which is an astonishing result for a man well versed in putting himself through the extreme sports wringer!

This latest extreme physical challenge will rank high among James' long list of astonishing achievements simply because of the difficulty it poses to every competitor. For those who are unaware of quite how extreme the race is, the MDS website's opening words are, "Welcome to the world of lunatics and masochists .... you are in the company of about 700 others who share your penchant for self destruction."

The Marathon des Sables covers approximately 150 miles over 6 days, and is the equivalent of 5.5 marathons in 6 days in extreme conditions - think dunes, 120°F temperatures, sand storms...

The race takes place in the Moroccan Sahara, the terrain is uneven, rocky, stony ground, and 15-20% of the distance is over sand dunes. In addition, competitors have to carry everything they need for the entire race (apart from water and a tent) on their backs. "At least it won't snow there!" commented James.

From all at MTC, congratulations James on yet another fantastic achievement!
