MTC Athletes On Podium

MTC athletes Harry, Phillips, Germaine, Jenny, Perri and Kelly have all been named as podium athletes for 2011…

2011 is an important year in athletics with the World Championships taking place in Daegu, South Korea from August 27 until 4 September being the main focus ahead of the Olympic Games the following year.

After a successful 2010 where Team GB picked up a record 19 medals at the European Championships in Barcelona including a gold medal for Phillips, a bronze for Jenny and 2 bronze medals for Perri, the list of UKA funded athletes has been announced. A selection panel, made up of the Head Coaches, National Event Coaches and independent statisticians chose 96 athletes ranging from those considered to be podium chances to developing athletes for the future. MTC stars Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, Phillips Idowu, Germaine Mason, Jenny Meadows, and Perri Shakes Drayton have been named in the podium category along with Kelly Sotherton being named in the podium relay squad after recently announcing her decision to concentrate solely on the 400m.

UKA Head Coach Charles van Commenee said: "It is that time of year again where we must review our athletes, their 2010 performances and make tough decisions based on our proven WCPP criteria. I am pleased to announce the 96 athletes which will, deservedly, be given support from UKA and the National Lottery. Athletes must prove themselves continuously to maintain their position on the programme which has performance at its core and we must demonstrate a clear return on investment to the lottery playing public. They want to see winners in British vests.

"There is no denying that, with two years to go, all eyes are firmly fixed on 2012 Olympic Games but 2011 really is crucial to any potential successes in London. I am confident the group of athletes selected will be amongst those competing at the eight international events this year and will represent themselves and the GB&NI team well on the international stage.

Philip's will be focused on securing a second successive world title, whilst Jenny and Perri will be looking to build on medals gained at this years Euro's.

Germaine and Harry have both struggled with injury problems this year and will be hoping that 2011 sees them place on the rostrum in Daegu.
