Perri Dominates In Birmingham

Perri Shakes-Drayton and Phillips Idowu claimed victory to qualify for Great Britain for the upcoming European Championships...

Perri Shakes-Drayton turned on the class on Saturday as she claimed victory in her main event, the 400m hurdles and in turn qualify for the European Championships in Barcelona. Perri looked in ominous form as she cruised home in 56.93s to finish ahead of former world junior bronze medallist Meghan Beesley with a time of 57.20s.

Perri continued with her impressive form as last weekend she again impressed at the European team championships in Bergen with a 50.51s relay leg in the 4x400m. After the race, Perri stressed that she was keen to keep her focus on hurdles despite her obvious 400m flat speed saying "It's good to know I can go out to Barcelona with confidence and know I can do my thing, but not get ahead of myself because I've run a good time. When I run the 400m flat it's more like fun because it's not my event, but when I do the hurdles it's like my time and I'm concentrating so hard. I felt a bit rusty technically, but I came through strong and that's what I wanted to do."

Phillips Idowu also leapt to an expected men's triple jump victory with a jump of 17.10m, his only properly executed jump of the competition. In tricky conditions, Phillips' did what he had to do in order for him to defend his title.

When asked about his performance Phillips said "It's nice to win those titles; it's nice to confirm I'm at least one of the best in this country. I knew that one jump should be enough to get me through but we were really just working on technical aspects today, trying to get my run up right. It was really windy so it was difficult to perfect the run up when you were adjusting each round, but I came here today thinking it was another technical session and I got it done, I'm still on one piece so now onto my next competition."

Congratulations to both Perri and Phillips.
