Phillips And Jenny In Continental Cup
Phillips Idowu and Jenny Meadows head to Croatia to represent Europe in the IAAF / VTB Continental Cup...
This weekend sees the newly revamped IAAF / VTB Bank Continental Cup as athletes from around the globe compete for their region; Africa, Americas, Asia/Pacific and Europe in the first IAAF Continental Cup trophy.
World and European champion Phillips Idowu (EUR) heads the contenders in the men's Triple Jump. The British athlete is a supreme championship performer and if he can reproduce the form which saw him leap to a lifetime best of 17.81m to land the European title in Barcelona earlier this year, then Europe can expect to earn the maximum points. Phillips will be in action on the 5th September at 17:20 and will compete with European team-mate Marian Oprea, the silver medallist from the Europeans, from Romania in what will be a strong Mens European triple jump team. The Americas duo, Alexis Copello and Randy Lewis are expected to provide the stiffest competition for Phillips and the European team.
World and European bronze medallist Jenny Meadows will be representing the European team in the women's 800m, which is sure to be one of the competitions tightest events. Jenny will be joined in the European team with Mariya Savinova, the European champion from Russia, as they look to hold off what is bound to be strong challenges from Janeth Jepkosgei and Zehra Bouras of the African team. The race takes place at 18:30 on the 4th September and Jenny heads into the race on good form having broken the two-minute barrier seven times this year.
