Phillips And Perri Impress In Rome

Phillips Idowu and Perri Shakes-Drayton both produced superb performances in the third leg on the Diamond League competition in Rome.

Perri, European 400m hurdles bronze medallist, competed over the 400 metre flat in an extremely strong field including current world leader Alyson Felix. Perri showed she can compete with the best athletes in the world, coming home in 6th position and improving her personal best to 51.47 seconds. With a victory in the 400m at the Loughborough International and with a new personal best in the under her belt, Perri who is still at university will be aiming for a podium finish at the upcoming World Athletics Championships.  

Phillips, current World and European champion, produced a confident performance and finished victorious in his first competitive meet of the outdoor season. Phillips has decided to concentrate on distance in 2011 and has his sights firmly set on breaking Jonathan Edward's world record. Phillips produced a world leading jump of 17.59 metres in the third round of the competition, finishing over 30 centimetres ahead of close rival Christian Olsen. Phillips will be looking to defend his World triple jump title in the upcoming World Championships in Daegu.
