Phillips Scores ‘Jump Shot’

World triple jump champion Phillips Idowu spends an afternoon playing basketball....

The Lucozade Sport Ambassador lost by just one point in a thrilling encounter against GB Standard Life Captain Drew Sullivan's team.

A talented basketball player at school Phillips still follows the game religiously and says he owes some of his success at the triple jump to his basketball roots.

"Basketball has helped me on the track, teaching me about my spatial awareness and fitness which is important and a great help when jumping. Basketball has always been a part of my life, it's who I am and my style is all out basketball from my head and wristbands to my long socks, it's in me."

Although he focused his attention towards the triple jump from the age of 15 he still clearly possesses the skills, as backed up by the Great Britain captain.

"Phillips was good he got stuck in and you can see that he's still got those basic skills, I guess once you learn those skills they never go and he still plays so they are fresh in him mind. I'd play a game with him again, his basketball talents are far better than my triple jump!"
