Shelagh's Blog...1

Shelagh Fogarty will be swimming a mile in the Serpentine Lake, Hyde Park later this month to raise funds for Sport Relief. Be sure to check back for regular updates on how she is preparing for the challenge...!

MTC's Shelagh Fogarty is getting her wetsuit out this winter for a great cause! Shelagh reports "For Sport Relief I'll be swimming a mile in the Serpentine in Hyde Park. It's not so much the mile which is the biggest challenge, more the very cold water and the wildlife!  I'm told the temperature in the water by mid March is around 7 Celsius - akin to cold tap water."

The presenter and journalist has received tips on technique and navigation in dark water by her friend and Channel swimmer, Peter Thompson. Rosemary George, another renowned Channel swimmer, is due to help Shelagh acclimatise to the open waters of the Serpentine by doing a few shorter swims there before the actual Sport Relief Mile. Although, due to unforeseen circumstances Shelagh is yet to actually step foot into the Lake. Shelagh stated "I haven't been in so far - snow got in the way once, and I've just shaken off a cold which I'm told is a good enough reason not to swim in a lake!!! But I'm keen to get in there because no amount of pool training can prepare me for the very different conditions of a coldwater lake."

The Serpentine offers not only a daunting task of having to brave the cold and wildlife, but it has actually claimed a person's life before but Shelagh accepts that this is all part of the Sport Relief challenge. When quizzed about the challenge her response was "nervous?? That'd be a yes......off to the pool right now in fact."
