Cycling World Champs Results

Lizzie Armitstead secures two silver medals at the 2010 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark...

Lizzie Armitstead produced some remarkable displays for the Great Britain Cycling team in Denmark to come away with 2 silver medals. The first of which came on Day 2 of the Championships in the Women's Team Pursuit, where Lizzie along with Joanna Rowsell and Wendy Houvenaghel put in an impressive ride but finished half a second behind an Australian trio that had to set a new world record to dethrone Lizzie and the girls.

Lizzie's second silver came just two days later on Day 4 of the Championships when she produced an even more astonishing performance in the Women's Omnium. Lizzie performed solidly in all 5 events starting with the 200m Time Trial where she almost dipped under the 12 second mark to record the sixth fastest time.

With the Omnium being introduced as a full Olympic discipline in 2012, all viewed the event as a top priority and each teams' roster reflected this as the best riders were lining up. For Lizzie and great Britain, it was an impressive first stab at a tough challenge. The Olympic version is expected to feature longer versions of the endurance races, plus and additional event, based on that track league staple, the "devil take the hindmost" which should be advantageous to Lizzie.

Lizzie Armitstead was clearly very happy with her performance in the Omnium: "I am chuffed to pieces with that. It was good and I'm surprised. I did enjoy it. It was a bit of a mental game really and I enjoy that from the road. It's like a mini stage race in one day and I have had a lot of practice of not letting my rivals get to me and that."

Another of Britain's most exciting young talents, David Daniell, took to the track on Day 3 in the Men's Kilometre Time Trial. Dave, known as the Diesel by some, posted a 1:02 time to claim an eventual seventh position, just two seconds behind the winner. Whilst slowing on the last lap as most riders do, David met his performance goal of being in the top 4 after 750 metres which is the critical distance for a GB rider as that is the distance they train for at Man 3 in the Olympic event, the Team Sprint.

Dave, who was also part of the Men's Sprint Team, is sure to view the Championships as vital experience that he can use and take forwards into his quest of challenging for medals at London 2012.
