Germaine Mason

High Jumper,
Olympic Silver Medallist

Germaine Mason came to the attention of the nation during the 2008 Beijing Olympics when he claimed, what was considered by many, an unexpected silver medal in the high jump. Born and raised in Jamaica he switched sporting allegiance in 2006, and now represents Great Britain. Germaine is eligible to represent Great Britain because his father is British and his mother and family now live in London.

Germaine won the silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics where he equalled his personal best of 2.34m, beaten only by Russia's Andrey Silnov with 2.36m.

He won silver and bronze medals at the World Junior Championships in 2000 and 2002 respectively, the latter event held in his hometown of Kingston. His first medal at senior level came at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, when he won a gold medal, having achieved a personal best jump of 2.34 metres. He finished fifth at the World Championships the same year.

Germaine is coached by Stephen Francis and is part of the MVP training group, which includes the likes of Asafa Powell and Shelly-Ann Fraser. He counts triple World Record Holder Usain Bolt as one of his best friends. He now spends three months of the year back on the island warm weather training, and competes on the circuit for the remainder of the year.

His second cousin is fellow British athlete, Simeon Williamson.
