Robbie Earle MBE
Broadcaster / Presenter,
Former Wimbledon Captain and Jamaica Footballer
Robbie Earle launched his football career at Port Vale in 1982 and in 1991 he signed for Wimbledon FC, for a then club record of £775,000. Robbie rapidly became a legendary member of the Wimbledon ‘crazy gang' side. During an extraordinary career, Robbie played in over 600 league games, scoring approximately 150 goals. He captained Wimbledon for five years and was also Captain of the Jamaican side for two years.
Since his retirement, Robbie Earl has successfully established himself as a respected sports journalist, enjoying regular work on both radio and television, including Capital Radio and Radio 5 Live and BBC TV, ITV, Sky and On Digital.
Robbie Earl has a long-term contract with ITV Sport to be one of their leading Football contributors. He played an integral role in the ITV broadcaster's team covering the 2002 World Cup. ITV then used him as one of their lead primetime pundits for their Champions League Coverage for 2006/2007. Robbie has also documented some of Africa's history for BBC's unique year and won the title for the live programme Strictly African Dancing where Robbie donned full Zulu Warrior attire to perform their warrior dance. Robbie's interest in current affairs and business development naturally led Robbie into different broadcasting arenas whilst also being involved in BBC's 2005 Year of Africa.
As an attacking midfielder, Robbie Earl made history in 1998 when he scored Jamaica's first goal in the World Cup Finals against Croatia, on the first occasion that Jamaica had qualified for the competition. [Robbie made the England squad but didn't make it onto the pitch].
Whilst enjoying his career as a professional football player, Robbie also established himself as a highly articulate and capable spokesperson and media personality. He was selected to be part of a Government appointed Football Taskforce established to address the various issues surrounding the sport. Along with David Mellor, the Chairman of the taskforce, Robbie toured the country with road shows, discussing pertinent issues involving the game at the time. This and other similar opportunities provided Robbie with an initial platform from which to launch what was to become, post retirement, a flourishing media career.
